Wednesday 11th August - We're off to see the tigers...or are we?

We were woken up by an early morning phone call informing us that A had managed to get us a car which would bring us to the tiger reserve. So we got ready and waited, and waited. Eventually the driver and A came and we were off.

Our first stop was a Fort, higher up than Amber Fort, which we had visited the week before. This Fort housed the worlds largest cannon one wheels, it was 250 tonnes and made out of six different metals. It took four elephants, one at each corner to stabilise the gun when it was fired. I thought it was strangely elegant to see a pigeon sitting in the cannon head as if he was a king. The cannon had only ever been fired once, for practice.

We walked around the fort and visited the armoury and the forgery, but as the day progressed the heat did too and we soon decided our best bet was to go grab some lunch before we melted completely. Back in the car our driver informed us there would be no time for lunch as the tiger reserve closed at 5pm, so we grabbed a packet of crisps each and a drink and were off.

The two hour journey, took three. It was long, we saw dead animals by the side of the road. I saw my first dead dog, it was bound to happen at some point, I just felt sad seeing it lying there in the debris by the side of the road. When we reached the reserve we were shocked to find it completely shut. It had not said anything about this in the guide book and was were very disappointed. It was ok, though, because our driver knew three very beautiful buildings we could go visit, which were nearby.

After nearly another hours drive, we arrived at these buildings. It was terrible, the smell was terrible, people were staring at us and the buildings were actually temples. Unlike the one in Chirdi however, these was practically empty, we could not really enter and take pictures, as people were inside praying and we felt so out of place. We even managed to get ourselves a stalker, who followed us around the whole complex.

Back in the car we just wanted to go back. Most of the journey back was spent trying to rest our eyes, sleep was nigh on impossible with the endless bumps in the road. We got dropped off at supposedly the best mall in Jaipur. There was actually not a great deal there and so we settled for a dinner of Domino's pizza.

We are going on a trip to a more remote area of Rajasthan and so I might not be able to post for a few days again, but enjoy the blog so far :-)
